Membership
PILA is a member based Association of an exclusively feminine gender.
Major provisions of the Constitution on membership cover eligibility, the
types and stipulated conduct of members among others.
Membership Qualifications
The primary qualifications for membership of the Associations are the
feminine gender and the professional qualifications in insurance. These are:
a) The Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London
(ACII) or the Nigerian equivalent, the Associateship of the Chartered
Insurance Institute of Nigeria (AIIN); or
b) The Fellowship of the London Institute (FCII).
Types of Membership
Members are categorized into two which are the full members and the
honorary members respectively.
Full Members
This is the group of members who are engaged in active practice and
are required to pay their annual subscriptions as one of the conditions for
retaining their membership.
Discipline
Discipline is the watchword of PILA as it is the major determinant of
forthrightness. Major disciplinary measures approved by the Association’s
Constitution include:
(a) Imposition of a fine on any member who breaches its code of conduct
at a meeting; and
(b) Expulsion for any act of unforthrightness such as forgery, fraud or
professional misconduct.
Honorary Members
These are members who have retired from active practice and are given
the privilege of exemption from paying annual subscriptions. However, they may neither seek elective positions nor participate in elections because
only financial members can retain these two privileges.
Ceasation of Membership
Membership of the Association may cease through:
(a) Voluntary resignation; or
(b) Expulsion.
- The Rights of a Member
- Duties of a Member
- The Association’s Code of Conduct
The rights and duties of members to the Association can be implied from the express provision of the Constitution on membership related matters.
The following are both the expressed and implied rights of each member:
- The right to participate in all the programmes of the Association subject to meeting any stipulated term(s) and condition(s).
- The right to receive notice of meetings, attend and be heard at such gatherings;
- The right to seek elective posts subject to any stipulated term(s) and condition(s), vote and be voted for at the Annual General Meetings subject to the category of membership; and
- The right to receive annual reports and minutes of any meeting at which a member is eligible to participate.
- It is a rule of life to give and take, therefore every right accruing to a member has corresponding duties attached. Some of these shall be highlighted.
The following are the expressed and implied duties respectively of a
member:
- Duty to abide by the Association’s code of conduct in her dealings with the Association.
- An implied duty to act, live and conduct her official duties professionally and private affairs in a responsible manner.
- To avoid any act that will bring the profession and/or the Association into disrepute or public ridicule.
- A duty to honor all financial obligations to the Association which includes but is not limited to the payment of annual subscription, levies, fees and so on.
Every Association has moral guide known as Code of Conduct for its
members, so does PILA. The Association has a five-item code which can
be grouped into two as follows:
General requirements from members; and Requirements at the Association’s meetings
The requirements are as highlighted below:
- Professionalism which demands that a member exhibits professionalism in the conduct of her affairs and duties.
- Decorum at meetings thereby prohibiting side talks or other forms of distraction at meetings.
- Comportment at meetings thereby forbidding members from the use of either indecent or abusive languages against each other at the Association’s meetings.
- Timely arrival at meetings as punctuality is the soul of business. Lateness at meetings without prior notice is frowned at thereby attracting appropriate sanctions.
- Regular attendance at meetings thereby disallowing absenteeism without prior notice because meetings do play a very important role in the affairs of Associations.
