  • The suspension of such member shall continue until the outstanding membership dues are paid.

Cessation / Loss of Membership

A member’s affiliation with the Association can end through two avenues: (a) By formally resigning their position; or (b) By being removed from the Association.

A person shall cease to be a member of the Association if she:

The Rights of a Member

The rights and duties of members to the Association can be implied from the express provision of the Constitution on membership related matters.

The following are both the expressed and implied rights of each member:

  • The right to participate in all the programmes of the Association subject to meeting any stipulated term(s) and condition(s).
  • The right to receive notice of meetings, attend and be heard at such gatherings;
  • The right to seek elective posts subject to any stipulated term(s) and condition(s), vote and be voted for at the Annual General Meetings subject to the category of membership; and
  • The right to receive annual reports and minutes of any meeting at which a member is eligible to participate.
  • It is a rule of life to give and take, therefore every right accruing to a member has corresponding duties attached. Some of these shall be highlighted.

Duties of a Member

The following are the expressed and implied duties respectively of a
member:

  • Duty to abide by the Association’s code of conduct in her dealings with the Association.
  • An implied duty to act, live and conduct her official duties professionally and private affairs in a responsible manner.
  • To avoid any act that will bring the profession and/or the Association into disrepute or public ridicule.
  • A duty to honor all financial obligations to the Association which includes but is not limited to the payment of annual subscription, levies, fees and so on.

The Association’s Code of Conduct

Every Association has moral guide known as Code of Conduct for its
members, so does PILA. The Association has a five-item code which can
be grouped into two as follows:

  • Professionalism which demands that a member exhibits professionalism in the conduct of her affairs and duties.
  • Decorum at meetings thereby prohibiting side talks or other forms of distraction at meetings.
  • Comportment at meetings thereby forbidding members from the use of either indecent or abusive languages against each other at the Association’s meetings.
  • Timely arrival at meetings as punctuality is the soul of business. Lateness at meetings without prior notice is frowned at thereby attracting appropriate sanctions.
  • Regular attendance at meetings thereby disallowing absenteeism without prior notice because meetings do play a very important role in the affairs of Associations.
